ALPENA, Mich. — A new discussion series kicks off this month, and its first topic relates to a critical moment in LGBTQ history.

Mitchel Dipzinski, who runs the poetics workshop, teamed up with the educational group Empowered Learners to present a new discussion series centering on LGBT issues.

The first discussion, “the Art of Protest” focuses on the beginning of the modern LGBT movement with the Stonewall riots of 1969. Dipzinski will also talk about the role of art in the movement from its beginning to the present.

He hopes the discussion may open some eyes to issues still facing the community.

“Equal opportunity in housing isn’t existent for trans individuals and some queer individuals. Equal opportunity within the job market isn’t existent. And these conversations are the ones that need to be had.”

The discussion group meets on June 16, from 6 to 8 PM, in the loft above the Fresh Palate.

In–person seating is limited, but you can also attend online. Use this form to register.
