New Alpena childcare center will help increase options for local parents

ALPENA, Mich. – Its one thing to have trouble affording childcare, but it’s another problem when where you live doesn’t have enough child care centers for it’s population.

A report from the Michigan League of Public Policy shows 44 percent of Michiganders live in what’s called a “child care desert.”

The organization defines that as an area where the ratio of children ages 0–5 to the number of licensed child care spots is greater than 3.

The average cost of child care in Alpena and the surrounding area is a little over 500 dollars a month.

All of this is why an Alpena mother and daughter decided to open Great Lakes Childcare Center.

“We realized the struggle of finding quality daycare there’s 1400 kids and only 370 spots, for child care right now,” said Great Lakes Childcare Office Manager Delynn Pauly. “We hope to offer more spots for kids and give parents some choices. ”

The owners of Great Lakes Child Care Center said they’re currently hiring and working hard to open their doors very soon.
