Montmorency Jail to close and merge with Alpena County

ALPENA, Mich. – Montmorency inmates will move to the Alpena County Jail.

The county jail said Montmorency inmates will move to Alpena County jail soon, but no specific date is set.

According to reports Montmorency Sheriff’s office employees will stay in Montmorency, but corrections officers will have the option to transfer to the new Alpena facility.

Alpena County Undersheriff Erik Smith said they welcome Montmorency’s staff especially in today’s climate

“With the times right now, we are having a hard time finding people who want to work in law enforcement in general and obviously if they are willing to have employees that are displaced from a job that would be awesome to pick those employees up,” said Undersheriff Erik Smith.

Smith said that while they are willing to take in staff from Montmorency, they still have to go through the normal hiring process.

County Commissioners voted to close the Montmorency jail and merge with Alpena County.

County officials said the number of inmates doesn’t justify the costs of running the jail.
