Michigan parents unite, call for statewide mask mandate in all schools

LANSING, Mich. —  A statewide coalition of parents called on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to implement an order requiring masks be worn indoors in all K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Michigan Parents Alliance for Safe Schools (MiPASS) launched a petition asking for a statewide mask mandate.  In a virtual press conference Wednesday, members of the group criticized legislators and others who they said were intimidating schools, local health departments and individuals who support safety measures.

MiPASS includes at least a dozen parent organizations statewide representing thousands of Michigan parents, with more joining the call for a mask protocol in all Pre-K-12 schools. The petition comes as the 2021-2022 school year starts, with new COVID-19 cases rising across Michigan.

The MiPASS petition can be viewed here. The petition also says anti-science politicians must be held accountable when they threaten to cut funds from public health agencies and schools that implement science-based safety measures such as mask protocol.
