Man dies on Long Lake after rescue efforts

An Alpena area man was found dead yesterday after a boating accident on Long Lake around 1:15 p.m.

Area fire and paramedics responded to a call of an unconscious boater found in the water. He was later identified as 90–year–old Robert Meno. A nearby fisherman noticed Meno’s boat hadn’t moved for an extended period of time. When he went over to help, he found the man unresponsive near his pontoon.
He pulled Meno to safety, immediately began CPR, and called 911. Later details revealed he had fallen into the lake and was unable to get back into the boat.

“He apparently left the boat to try and untangle some rope or debris from the prop, and at that point he ended up not being able to return onto the boat.”

Meno was pronounced dead on the scene despite rescue efforts. Firefighters and paramedics say they appreciate the help of citizens who assisted first responders. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time.
