Lumberjacks score with local basketball star Chris DeRocher

Chris DeRocher signs to play basketball with Alpena Community College.

ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena High School’s all-time leading scorer and male athlete of the year, Chris DeRocher, has found a college basketball squad. The 6’6″ wing signed to play for the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks.

“It’s going to be a very exciting season,” said DeRocher. “Stay home, play for the hometown team and continue to rep Alpena.”

As a Wildcat the hometown hero put on a show. Earlier this year DeRocher broke AHS’ all-time scoring record at 1,435 points, and the senior ended his Wildcat career with 1,625 points. During his senior year, DeRocher averaged 22.9 points and 9.6 rebounds. Plus, he tacked on 38 three-pointers of his 101 career total.

Lumberjacks Head Coach Mark Jacobs loves DeRocher’s leadership and shooting ability on the floor.

“I couldn’t be more excited,” said Jacobs. “I told my wife this is the second best signing I’ve ever had, and the first one was the marriage license. I’m thrilled. I’m not taking away anything from my other athletes, but this is the athlete I’ve dreamed about for a long time.”

He joins his Aunt Cindy who was hired as the new ACC Athletic Director this summer. Basketball talent runs in the family. Cindy sits third in the Alcona High School record books after scoring 1,263 points, which broke the Tigers’ record in 1979.

“Just a phenomenal fit,” said Jacobs. “He will take us to the next level.”

DeRocher will wear number 33 like he did at Alpena High School. The Lumberjacks begin conditioning for basketball on September 2 and official practice tips off October 1.
