Local dentist offers post-Halloween advice

ALPENA, Mich.– The spooky season is officially over, but we all know Halloween candy sticks around well into December. WBKB’s Kent Davis spoke with a local dentist about the best way to keep your kid’s teeth healthy after Halloween.

Greg Resnick, D.D.S., said parents don’t need to worry about tooth decay on November 1. He said that decay will need a few months of bad habits to set in; one night of candy won’t rot teeth. Resnick gave WBKB an example from his own parenting experience.

“For my kids, I’d let them have all the candy they want on Halloween. And then after that, they would have to keep it to very few times a day.”

Resnick encouraged parents to let their kids have a bit of leftover candy for desert.

“They can’t snack on it frequently throughout the day. You can’t let them keep it in their room and have it whenever they want. Make the candy theirs, but you hang onto it.”

He encouraged parents to use the post–Halloween period as a time to help their kids build a healthy relationship with sweets. He also advised parents to help kids understand good dental habits early, such as brushing in little circles and flossing once a day.
