Library begins new chapter at temporary location
ALPENA, Mich.– The Alpena County Public Library is currently in the process of setting up shop at its new location.
For the past week, the Corrigan Moving Service has been transporting the library’s seventy–odd–thousand book collection to the lot between Jo–Ann’s Fabric and Big Lots at Bear Point Plaza. Even though there’s much more work to be done, this new location is already taking shape. Books are starting to fill shelves, gradually shrinking the stacks of boxes and rows of carts.
The library staff is currently planning to re–open as a curbside pick–up location no later than September 7. While only some of the collection will be publicly available at that time, director Eric Magness–Eubank says that members will be able to make use of the state catalog to order from other libraries.
For those who are still holding onto their pre–pandemic checkouts, Eric says there will be a generous grace period for returns.
“Probably about two months. We know people have held onto these things for a while and don’t want them to all come back at once. We want people to be able to do it without worrying about overdue fines.”
The library will be operating out of this location for the next year or so while the downtown building is updated with modern technology and improved accessibility.
