Lady Wildcats soccer team falls to Petoskey 4-1

ALPENA, MI – The Lady Wildcats soccer team opened up the new season with a shutout victory over Tawas. On Tuesday, they had their first Big North Conference opponent as they hosted the Petoskey Northmen.

Starting things off in the first half, the Lady Wildcats would get a setpiece chance to try and take the early lead. Kami Schultz would line up to take a free kick from around 20 yards out. Jenna Leeck goes in motion and instead of crossing it, Kami fires a long shot and it’s over the keeper and in the back of the net for a goal. Alpena now leads 1–0.

Later in the half, Petoskey would take control and move up the right wing looking to cross it in the box. That cross is right at the back post, one Northmen just misses the shot but she’s got backup and she puts it behind Faith Henski and scores. Petoskey ties it up and they would put their feet on the gas as the game continued.

Petoskey would later have a counterattack. This shot heads right for the bottom left corner, the goalie isn’t able to make the dive in time and that one is another goal for Petoskey. The Northmen take the lead heading into the second half.

Alpena’s defense struggled to hunker down against repeated attacks from Petoskey. The Northmen get it close over to the right side of the field, and it’s a high shot that just gets over Henski’s glove and it’s in the back of the net for a third straight Petoskey goal.

In the end, Alpena was unable to find an answer for the Northmen both on defense and offense and Petoskey would grab one final goal off a quick one–touch shot in the bottom left corner.

Once Petoskey started to heat up, Alpena had no way of cooling them down. The Wildcats come up short in their first conference game. Final score is 4–1. The girls will be back in action on Thursday when they host Sault St. Marie.
