ALPENA, Mich. – June is recognized as Pride Month for the LGBTQ community.
The month is celebrated each year to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City.
Stonewall was the topping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.
Bill Clinton was the first U.S. President to officially recognize Pride related events in 1999.
Former President Barack Obama declared June LGBT Pride Month in 2009.
