Judge Ed Black appointed to Chief Justice

ALPENA, Mich. – Alpena’s 26th Circuit Court Judge Ed Black has been named Chief Justice.

The states supreme court administration office made the announcement Wednesday.

Black will replace Chief Justice Benjamin Bolser who’s set to retire this spring. Black will fill out Bolser’s term until the end of the year.

With the vacancy, Governor Gretchen Whitmer will likely appoint a successor to fill the vacancy until the next election which is in November of 2022.

In this new role Judge Black will oversee operations in the 26th Circuit and 88th District Courts along with probate courts in Alpena and Montmorency counties.

Judge Black will begin his new role April 1St.
