Hot and sticky weekend on the way

Hot, dry air and occasionally breezy winds from the southwest will lead to high fire danger over the weekend. The National Weather Service has posted a Fire Weather Watch for Saturday and Sunday. Any outdoor fires could spread very easily, so the National Weather Service advises to avoid any outdoor burning.

High temperatures today got up to 82 degrees in Alpena, 87 degrees in Traverse City, Michigan and 96 degrees in Minneapolis. The high heat over Minnesota will slide eastward, we’ll have temperatures near 90 or in the 90s over the weekend.

A high pressure system centered over Kentucky is bringing mainly clear skies over northern Michigan. It’s steering winds out of the south/southwest which will bring hotter temperatures over the weekend. Fair weather will continue, but there’s more cloud cover over northern Minnesota and North Dakota that will continue to drift eastbound. So we’ll likely end up with partly cloudy skies Saturday.

Saturday: Partly cloudy and hot. Early-morning lows will be near 65 degrees. Temperatures will rise to the lower 80s during the late-morning. Afternoon highs will heat up to near 90 degrees. Evening temperatures will remain warm, in the 80s then 70s late.

Sunday: Sunny and sticky. Predawn temperatures will begin around 65 degrees. Late-morning temperatures will warm to the lower 80s. Afternoon highs will get up to about 92 degrees, which is close to 20 degrees above “normal!” It will continue to feel sticky in the evening with temperatures in the 80s to upper 70s.

Monday: Possibly a spotty shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon, otherwise mainly dry and hot. Early-morning temperatures will be close to 68 degrees. Afternoon highs will reach around 90 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the lower 80s to 70s.
