Hospice of Michigan in need of volunteers

Alpena, Mich — Hospice care helps comfort those who are at the end of their life.

It’s a vital service that helps families, friends, and patients. Hospice of Michigan operates up here on the ‘Sunrise Side,’ providing that necessary care, but they need additional help to keep caring out their mission.

The nonprofit organization is looking for a number of volunteers to help out around the area. Volunteers can serve in a variety of roles to help patients, administrators and caretakers. Whether it’s bringing a dog for comfort, putting together puzzles, doing administrative work, or providing caregiver relief, the experience can be extremely rewarding.

Volunteer Vickie Fields has been serving at Hospice of Michigan for 12 years, and she’s created so many highlights in her life, thanks to the work she’s able to do with the organization and patients.

“It makes you feel good,” said Fields. “You think that you’re making them feel good, but really, on the inside, it’s just such a good feeling to walk away and know that you did something good today, just for an hour, two hours of your time.”

If you would like to volunteer, Hospice of Michigan will be hosting a training meeting next Thursday at 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Head to their office located at the Harborside Center in Alpena (145 S State Ave, Alpena, MI 49707).

“They say volunteers live longer, they’re happier people, I can say that’s true,” said Fields.
