Holy Cross Cemetery Places Veterans Flags on Graves this Memorial Day

For Memorial Day this year, Holy Cross Cemetery, along with some community members, paid a special tribute to Americans military veterans. Although the tradition is long past, this year the flags at Holy Cross Cemetery almost did not happen. “Yes, we’re going to be having a flag placement all over the cemetery. We received a grant from the Home Depot Foundation to buy it for these beautiful flag holders. All metal and then the flags that go in them. The old plastic flag holders were hard because they broke up in the wintertime and they didn’t last,” Kathleen Melville-Hall, cemetery committee. said. For our 156th Memorial Day in America Holy Cross will have flags.

“And so, the whole bottom line is, as we go through and when we see these, we look and we can see, okay, this is a veteran’s marker. Here’s another one. There’s a veteran who was in World War II, we put the flag out. We start out with this part, taking it down and close to the edge of it. So, it’ll be in firm ground. And then we place the flag in so that when the people coming around to mow the lawn come through, they can kind of quickly get at this and go on past and keep going and helping out.” she said.
