HLFD suspects wood stove failure in fire

ALPENA, Michigan — We have some additional details regarding Monday’s fire on wolf creek road.

Hubbard Lake Fire Chief Mike Eller said the department currently suspects a failure in the house’s wood stove was responsible for the burn.

The Hubbard Lake team received the call at 11:51 and was on the scene just before noon. HLFD received back–up from the Wilson and Green Township departments as well as the CRTC.

Additionally, Eller said the building’s structure provided a few challenges.

“The house is old and that made it quite interesting. When we get into an old house like that, people build over stuff and build over stuff. You’ve got a lot of pockets to go and chase [fires]. So it makes it tough to do a straight attack.”

Crews managed to put out the fire by mid–afternoon. Thankfully, the residents weren’t home when the fire started and nobody was hurt.

Eller said he’s thankful for the work of HLFD’s volunteer firefighters, and added they’re always looking for new members of the team.
