Gov. Whitmer announces temporary layoffs; possible short-term extension of stay home order

Lansing, Mich. — Governor Whitmer announced the temporary layoff of approximately 2,900 state government employees.  Whitmer made the announcing during a COVID-19 press briefing this afternoon.  Whitmer said she made a difficult decision, but the layoffs are necessary.

“In order to ensure that the essential services that we provide everyday to the people of Michigan continue, I’ve made the difficult choice to approve a temporary layoff in departments across state government,” the governor said.

The layoffs will last 10 days.  Laid-off state employees will retain health insurance and other benefits and will be automatically enrolled into the unemployment process the governor said.

Governor Whitmer also announced a possible short-term extension of the Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order that is in place through the end of April.  Whitmer said she would provide details in another update on Friday, April 24.
