Good Samaritan law helps save lives and avoid charges

ALPENA, Mich.–Michigan state police want to remind residents about Michigan’s Good Samaritan law.

Adopted in 2016, the Good Samaritan law protects people who seek medical care from drug overdoses, from receiving potential charges.

Michigan state police information officer Derrick Carroll explains why this law helps save lives.

“We need to have them get medical attention immediately and too many times people panic thinking what should we do, the police are ganna show up. We wanted to take that out of the equation. First and foremost think about saving human lives.

MSP says they’ve seen a rise in overdose fatalities.

According to recently released data, Alpena residents accounted for 127 non fatal overdoses between January 1, and June 2021.
