Girl Scouts Work on Nest Boxes to Bring Native Birds Back to Area

The Girl Scouts of Alpena are up to something new for their spring project. The St. Paul Troops were making a lot of noise hammering away creating nest boxes for baby birds to have a place to belong to in the community.

“Kind of a little spring project. We needed some new bird houses so what we did was went and bought the kits at NEMROC to support them also in the community. We thought it would be a good project for the girls to do and then I can keep them updated on how many birds we get and send them some pictures so they can see where their bird houses ended up and what they’re doing,” LaFarge Presque Isle Quarry worker, Vicki McCoy said.

The nest box program is in conjunction with Cornell University. The program has created 49 nest boxes at the Grand Lake area.

“The bird houses are going to be located at our facility out at the quarry. We do a study at the end of the year at Cornell University and we have a total of 49 nest boxes out at the quarry. We keep track of the breeding seasons and how many eggs are laying and how many baby birds are released and we’ve been doing that for about 7 years,” she added.

At Monday’s event, the girls were not only helping out their community but also learning the educational value of birds. McCoy revealed that the nest boxes would hopefully bring back the native Eastern Bluebirds.

“Birds are very important. What we’re trying to get back is some of the eastern bluebirds. There are a native and we’re trying to get them back to the area,” she revealed.
