Friends Together Invites the Whole Community to Address Mental health Together

Alpena is taking on cancer one survivor at a time. Friends Together, a nonprofit founded to help people with cancer in Alpena, is taking on mental health for all Alpena residents. “Here at Friends Together, we have some new and exciting programs happening this spring. We’ve decided to add some workshops in addition to our existing support groups,” Executive Director of friends Together, Melissa Burns said. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Friends Together decided to address the entire community. “Most of these are open to anyone. You don’t have to have cancer to attend these groups. And just like any program that we offer here at Friends together, they are free of charge. We have art with friends, eat with friends, learn with friends. We have yoga and we have sound baths,” said Burns.

One in five Americans will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. “We’re offering our workshops to improve the mental health of our community because what we’ve found is that sometimes when individuals have an activity to engage in that they oftentimes start opening up and if you would like to sign up for our workshops, just give us a call 989-356-3231,” said Burns.
