Firework safety tips in preparation for July Fourth Weekend

ALPENA, MI. – Fireworks are one of the most iconic ways to celebrate the Fourth of July. With the highly anticipated Alpena fire work show just around the corner, the Alpena Fire Department shared some firework safety tips in preparation for July Fourth Weekend.

“Fireworks are amazing things! You have to be safe while using them. Obviously, don’t light them in your hand. Do not light them and enclose them in your hand. Make sure you are not in a high foliage area. These things go anywhere and everywhere. You usually cannot control where they go. ” said Capt. Morrison.

Be sure to use a flat surface and keep a bucket of water nearby. After you’ve lit your firework, be sure not to turn your back to it.
If the firework does not light, do not attempt to relight it. The city ordinance lists certain times and locations that fireworks are permitted in Alpena. Be sure to adhere to the rules.
“The reason we have a time limit on the fireworks is because of the noise. You do not want fireworks going all night long. People still have to work the next day. It is about being courteous to everyone.” said Capt. Morrison

If you plan to light your own fireworks, beware of your surroundings. Light them in an area that won’t disturb people or property surrounding you to ensure a safe holiday weekend.
