Double Trouble: Alcona Baseball and Softball Win District Crowns

LINCOLN, MI-  As the Alcona Softball Team was celebrating their district title in Au Gres there seemed to be two priorities for the girls. The first was to take as many pictures as possible. The second was to keep tabs on how their friends on the baseball team were doing in their own district final.  While the girls had no problem with a 17-1 win in the district final over Mio, the boys made it much more interesting.

The final score will deceive you. An 18-8 win over Au Gres-Sims seems pretty straight forward. Until you realize that after six innings Au Gres-Sims held an 8-4 lead. Down to their last three outs the Tigers went to work as they quickly scored two three runs to trim the deficit to one. Garrett Somers would tie the game with an RBI triple. Ricky Schott would deliver the go ahead hit that scored Somers. Deciding that a 9-8 lead was not enough the Tigers kept rolling and scored nine more times.  Collin Walker added a two run single and Somers drove in two more with a double.  When the inning ended 14 runs had scored and Alcona led 18-8.

After Owen Borsvold recorded the first out of the seventh he was relieved by Evan Borsvold who recorded the final two outs and the Tigers were district champions.  Alcona will take on Rogers City in the regionals.  The game is scheduled for 4 PM on June 7. The game will be at Hillman High School.

For the ladies on the softball diamond they were the clear favorite in their district and they made sure to prove it.  After winning 12-0 in the semi final against Au Gres-Sims, the Tigers defeated Mio 17-1 in the championship game.

Miah Schopfer was the winning pitcher for Alcona in both games.  Her offense made sure to give her plenty of run support and Alcona now prepares to travel to Carson City where they will take on Coleman in the regional semi-final.
