DeRocher, Wildcats Roll Past Gaylord on Senior Night

ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Wildcats varsity volleyball team snapped a seven-game losing streak as they defeated the Gaylord Blue Devils 3-1 (25-13, 11-25, 25-22, 25-17) on Wednesday. This past week, the Wildcats have been working more on their communication and it paid off.

“We worked on talking a lot,” said senior Allie DeRocher. “It’s hard to talk with a mask on. We had to make sure that balls weren’t hitting the floor, because that was our weakness.”

Not only the Wildcats picked up their second conference win of the season, but they also won on senior night. DeRocher, Jade Gray, Kate Skiba, and Kayla Haken are this years seniors for the Wildcats.

“It feels really good to win on senior night,” said DeRocher. “It was nice to pick up a conference win in front of the home crowd. Winning set three was huge for us. It set the tone for the fourth set, which helped us win.”

DeRocher paced the Wildcats with 12 kills and 20 digs. Jade Gray contributed with seven kills and eight digs, Kate Skiba had five kills, 25 digs, and four aces, and Kami Schultz finished with six digs and four aces.

Alpena (9-8) will be in the Upper Peninsula on Oct. 5 for a match against Sault Ste. Marie.
