City of Alpena seeking public input on future plans

ALPENA, Mich. — The City of Alpena is asking for residents’ help in their strategic planning process.

A Strategic Plan is an outlook of what both residents and officials want the city to look like in three to five years.

Acting City Manager Steve Shultz says that while the plan covers at least three years into the future, it’s a living document that can change with the times.

“We want the public to let us know where they want to be,” Shultz said. “It’s kind of a big picture thing of what do we want Alpena to become, and what are the steps to get there. We utilize it for the next three to five years, but it’s kind of a living document so it might change a little bit as we go forward.”

Residents can fill out a survey to give their input for the city’s future plans. Mayor Matt Waligora says the plan is very public oriented, and they ask for input so council members can best represent the people of Alpena.

“Even though we’re representatives, we don’t always know what people want to see,” Waligora said. “It’s just a way for us to interact and communicate well with the people we serve.”
