ALPENA, MI. – In honor of the 170 Civil War veterans buried in Alpena County, The Sons of the Unions Veterans want to place a monument on the lawn of the Alpena County Courthouse.
The Civil War Lockwood Camp 139 was an Alpena Civil War interest group. Their efforts over the span of ten years have led to an official Cannon Memorial Fundraiser for Alpena.

“You need to have things out there to remember what happened. Of course the civil war is the bloodiest war we have had in our country. There was over 600,000 deaths. Even more than we had in world war two.” said Bruce Zann, fundraiser coordinator.

The Sons of the Unions Veterans feel that this memorial is a way to permanently honor the sacrifices made in the Civil War.

Zann said the cause is very important to him, specifically. “I visited Gettysburg and its hallowed ground. I consider myself a tough guy, but I break down. In the fight that we have- it just interests me so much. It is a big cause for me and it is dear to my heart. That is why I am personally involved and would like to see this succeed.”

The group has reached 10 percent of their thirty thousand dollar goal- with the hope that they raise the needed funds before Memorial Day of 2023.
