Bridge to tentatively re-open this weekend

ALPENA, Mich. — We have some additional details on the projected opening of the Bagley Street bridge.

As we reported yesterday, the bridge will tentatively reopen this weekend.

However, Ryan Brege of the Road Commission emphasized that the bridge is still part of a construction zone and drivers should treat it as such. Brege recommended drivers take the bridge area slower than usual and keep both hands on the wheel. He also said you should be mindful of the space you share with other motorists.

“The main risk is that we don’t have the width of shoulders we would like to see in this instance. The roadway is going to be necked down somewhat. Motorists have to be careful approaching motorists coming from the other direction.”

Brege said the bridge will open between Friday, December 17 and Sunday, December 19 if all goes well.

Construction resumes next spring.

Once completed, the bridge will allow for two lanes of traffic in each direction. It will also have sidewalks for pedestrians, and a full set of street lamps for improved visibility.
