Au Gres-Sims Looks to Defend Regional Championship

AU GRES,MI- In 2021, the Au Gres-Sims Wolverines went unbeaten in the regular season, a season that ended in a regional championship. While the 2022 team suffered one loss, the goal remains the same for Coach Brian Sanchez and his team,

They begin the postseason as the top seed in their region. They host Kinde North Huron on Friday. The teams prepare to meet for the third consecutive year in the playoffs. Au Gres defeated Kinde in last years regional final 48-42.

While  last years team was an offensive juggernaut, this years group has been more focused on dominating both sides of the ball. “Defense has been a big factor for us,” said Cole Pendred, a junior. “Last year we just outscored teams. This year we are keeping them off the board.”

The mindset of the team is also different.  They have learned that talent alone can only get you so far.  “Last year we had talent, but we had no discipline whatsoever. They did not want to put in the work. This year we still have the talent, but we have the mental stability we did not have a year ago,” said Casey Williams, a senior. Williams along with running back Keagan Bender are two of the core pieces that returned from last years regional champions.

Round three of the Au Gres-Kinde rivalry takes place Friday, and the winner moves to the regional final.
