ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Board of Education approved a new hybrid course for the high school during April’s meeting. We spoke with one APS staff member to learn more about what this class, “Perspectives of Democracy,” offers students.

APS offers hybrid English and social study courses for freshman and sophomore students. Now, “Perspectives of Democracy” fills that spot for juniors.

Meaghan Gauthier, Assistant Superintendent for curriculum, says these courses allow students to apply their critical reading skills to American political and government texts.

“So they’ll be learning about all aspects of our government, but applying their English skills and English standards along the way. They’ll be closely reading concepts that help them understand our government — what it’s able to do and what it’s not able to do.”

The course also integrates project–based learning, allowing students to shape their learning experience and actively engage with the content.

Gauthier told us that students were the ones who first advocated for the new class!
