Alpena Marina Getting a New Facelift this Summer

“So, a couple of years ago we applied for a grant through the Waterways Commission, and we were we were awarded a $306,000 grant. It’s a 50/50 match. So, the city is putting in 50 percent of that. And what we’re going to do out here is replace these fixed docks with floating docks. And on this side of the marina, already we have put in potable water, that will happen on the other side when we replace the docks as well,” Mayor of Alpena Cindy Johnson said. The mayor emphasized the importance of the marina to our local businesses and economy. “This is our fourth entrance into the city, which is really important for boaters coming through to have a place that they want to come to stop, enjoy downtown Alpena and everything that we have to offer,” Mayor Johnson said.

The contractor, McArthur Construction, will be doing the project in segments. “So, the improvements we’re doing to the marina will continue and we have to do them in stages, of course, because funding is always an issue. But we have several projects in our CIP coming up that we’ll continue to get done, including fixing the restrooms here at the marina, that’s separate from the restrooms that are going to go in by the band shop. This project, the Waterways Commission, approved this contract. We’re waiting for approval from EGLE right now, and that application is in. As soon as they say go, McArthur Construction will be putting on the docks this summer,” she said.
