Alpena’s Sunrise Centre hosts drug giveaway to help save lives

ALPENA, Mich. – Tuesday is International Overdose Awareness Day, and one area substance abuse center held an event to help save lives.

Tuesday, Sunrise Centre in Alpena gave away a life– saving drug called Narcan.

The medication helps reverse opioid overdoses.

People had the opportunity to receive the medication anonymously on a first come first serve basis.

Sunrise staff said providing the drug can help keep people with addictions safe.

“By doing this event we are making more people aware,” said Sunrise Clincial Supervisor Kathy Freel. “My simple thing is save a life, Narcan can save lives.”

Freel said Overdose Awareness Day is represented by the colors silver and purple. Silver, to honor the lives lost to overdose and purple for awareness.

She said most people are affected in some way by addiction.

“Addiction affects everyone,” said Freel. “I believe that every household you know somebody that suffers from alcoholism or drug addiction.”

Sunrise Centre offers several services for people suffering from addiction.

Freel said if you or someone you know still needs Narcan after the event to call their office 989-356-3559.
