Alpena High School is ready to open up outdoor facilities for the fall

ALPENA, Mich. — On June 2, the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) gave permission to schools to reopen facilities for summer activities. In order for schools to open outdoor facilites, two things have to happen.

  1. School administration must announce to students and staff that facilities are open.
  2. The 2019-20 school year must be completed.

“It feels like a long time coming,” said Alpena Athletic Director Tim Storch. “We’re excited to get back at it. It’s been tough for everybody. Obviously, we feel bad for our graduating seniors that didn’t have a spring season.”

On June 15, Alpena will be hosting an outdoor opening for conditioning and fitness as part of phase one of returning high school sports. This only involves Alpena athletes that plan on playing volleyball and football this fall. Athletes who attend will be put in groups of 10 or less and must remain in their groups throughout phase one and must practice social distancing. If an athlete does not feel comfortable in attending, they will not be penalized.
