Alpena Weather – May 31, 2018

Despite a few showers to start off the morning and a few hit-or-miss brief downpours this afternoon, temperatures made it up to 85 degrees in Alpena today. Enough midday sunshine shone through combined with a stiff breeze out of the southwest that pumped up the temperatures into the 80s across Northeast Michigan. As the calendar turns to June, temperatures will fall by some 20 degrees into tomorrow afternoon.

On the national weather map, a low pressure system north of the Great Lakes is responsible for a wide range of weather conditions over the eastern third of the country. A trough-line, shown in a black dashed line, is extending down the Eastern Seaboard and bringing scattered showers from New York state through South Carolina. The cold front attached to the same low pressure system is currently draped across Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, and it will bring in colder temperatures beginning tomorrow as it crosses through our state.

Tomorrow will start out in the 50s, and the afternoon high will only reach the mid 60s with mainly cloudy skies and a breeze out of the north.

Sunshine will return for Saturday, but if you have any outdoor plans this weekend, you will likely want to grab the jacket. Saturday morning will start off with temperatures in the 40s, and high temperatures will get near 70 degrees over the weekend. There is a chance of showers Sunday afternoon, but those showers should be quick-moving.
