Alpena Salvation Army still in need for school supplies

ALPENA, Mich. — Over the past 10 years, they have distributed more than 2,000 backpacks filled with supplies to families in need. Last year, 130 backpacks with over 3,200 items were distributed in Alpena County.

Major Prezza Morrison says they’re expecting more this year because of increased financial concerns because of the pandemic. She also said they weren’t able to man their booth at Walmart for the donations, making it harder to accept donations. “Because of the COVID requirements we weren’t allowed to man the booths,” she said. “So I think a lot of people just kind of walked by and really didn’t notice it, and if there was someone there who was kind of reminding them and giving them sheets out, they probably would have taken part in it.”

Maj. Morrison says they still need around 3,000 more items for their distribution day on August 27. Anyone looking to donate is welcome to drop items off at their office, located at 722 N. 2nd Ave. and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a basket outside of the building for people to drop off, or donations will also be accepted inside. Some supplies they still need include 3-inch 3 ringed binders, glue bottles, markers, index cards and scissors. “Thank you for your continued support of The Salvation Army,” said Maj. Prezza. “We appreciate all that you do to help us serve others. The way I feel is that you are the army. Without you we wouldn’t be able to do what we do and so we really appreciate all of the work that you do.”

To attend the distribution day on Aug. 27, each family must bring a school ID.
