Alpena Public Schools Looks to Hire 19 Teachers Among Other Positions

Alpena Public Schools is looking to fill a number of positions before the next school year.

The jobs range from full time teachers, substitutes to bus drivers. “We’re looking for custodians, bus drivers, bus attendants,” said Samantha Wilson, executive director of human resources of Alpena Public Schools. “We’re looking for a lot of different positions right now.”

There are plenty available including 19 openings for teachers. “Math and science, English language. Special education is a position that we’re really trying to recruit,” said Wilson.

Staffing shortages in schools has been affecting districts throughout the country and APS is no exception. “Everyone right now is experiencing a lack of teachers but we’ve had some great candidates,” Wilson said. “We have some really great teachers here and that’s what we’re looking for. We’re looking for great teachers to come here and really make a difference in students’ lives.”

Communications Director for APS, Lee Fitzpatrick, said Alpena is a great place to live and it should attract applicants from around the state and beyond. “This is a place where you can be where you vacation,” he said. “Many of us are transplants that have made the successful transition to life in northeast Michigan and there’s no place better to be.”

The job fair is Thursday, July 21 at the central office on Gordon road in Alpena.
