Alpena Golf Prepares for First Trip to State Finals

ALPENA, MI – The Alpena Wildcats boys golf team has had quite the season and it’s not over quite yet. The Wildcats qualified for the MHSAA State Finals making school history as its the first time Alpena has reached a State Championship.

It certainly takes a dedicated group of athletes to achieve such a milestone. Head Coach Tate Skiba knew even ahead of this season that his team would become a memorable one. “It’s a special group of kids,” he said. “I would say this is a resounding success.”

There’s no doubt that the debut will be a special moment. Especially for Coach Skiba’s senior class who has one last opportunity to compete as Wildcats. Senior Easton Schultz isn’t backing down from the challenge ahead. “We’re going to lay it all on the line,” he said. “We really have nothing to lose.”

Being the first team in school history to make their debut at a State Final has given the Wildcats a sense of confidence. “We can’t control what other schools do,” said Skiba. “I want us to lay all our chips on the table and see where we fall.”

The Wildcats travel to the Fortress in Frakenmuth on June 9 and 10 for the MHSAA State Finals.
