Alpena DDA hosting Leap Day festivities for a chance to win local prizes

ALPENA, Mich.— If you’re looking for some fun on leap day this year, Alpena’s Downtown Development Authority has you covered. The city is putting on its first Leap Year Local event to get residents out to enjoy downtown and beat the winter blues.

“We will be releasing next week a list of 29 different activities to do in downtown Alpena. Some of them will be hosted by different businesses, others will be more general, like take a photo in front of your favorite piece of artwork downtown or visit your favorite retailer downtown,” explains Executive Director of the DDA, Anne Gentry.

These are just a few examples of things you may see on the list. When that list does come out, the goal is to complete as many of the activities as possible for entries to win a downtown gift basket full of items from local businesses and 100 Downtown Dollars. The more activities you complete, the more chances you’ll have to win.

Gentry says, “The United Way of Northeast Michigan just opened their office downtown, relocated down here, and they are doing ‘come get kisses’ at the United Way. So anyone can stop by and get little Hershey’s Kisses candies and learn more about what that organization is. Another is The Black Sheep Pub is hosting ‘count how many black sheep’ are located inside of their space.”

You can be on the lookout for the list on the DDA’s website next week, at downtownalpenami.com. You will need to complete all of the activities on Leap Day in order for them to be counted.
