Alpena County Sheriff’s Office Gives Out Turkeys Instead of Tickets

Just in time for the holidays, the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office is spreading some cheer by handing out turkeys instead of tickets.

About 1,000 pounds was given to the department from the McInerney Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Thunder Bay. Now, when deputies observe a minor traffic violation, they’ll give out a turkey for the holidays instead of a ticket. “It’s part of community involvement but, more importantly, it’s hopefully giving a family a turkey dinner, a Christmas dinner, instead of choosing between that and a couple more presents for their kids,” said Michael McInerney, owner. “It’s the least we can do.”

Deputy Mike Lash has been with the department for 15 years and it’s refreshing for him to spread positivity rather than punishment. “I think it’s a great opportunity for them, and for our department as well, to have a positive influence on the community and bring some joy to the holiday season for everybody,” he said.

One driver, Sunny Wagner made a mistake on the road but, to her surprise, she drove away with dinner and without a ticket. “I’m so excited,” she said. “I apparently rolled through a stop sign briefly. I thought I was going to be in so much trouble and get a ticket, a Christmas ticket, but instead I got a turkey. It’s a beautiful day.”

By noon on friday, the department had already given out 10 turkeys with plenty more to give away and get involved in the spirit of giving.
