Alpena County sells senior center to the Alpena Area Senior Citizen Council

ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Board of Commissioners had a meeting today, only this time it was over the conference call app Zoom. One of the items on the agenda was the decision to sell Alpena’s Senior Center facility to the Alpena Area Senior Citizen Council.  The senior council would be able to purchase the property for $60,000.

The transfer in ownership would allow the county to avoid future expenses involving the facility. Presenter and Council Member Marty Thomson said this was a win–win for both sides. One of the concerns brought up was whether or not the senior center would be able to provide for itself after the sale went through.

Fire Chief Bill Forbush, who also serves as president on the senior council said that they have enough funds, even after the purchase. “The senior center is not rich obviously,” he said, “but we do have a sizable nest egg that helps us to ensure that our programs can operate for a period of time should anything happen.”

The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the sale and afterward Chief Forbush thanked them on behalf of the senior center and pledged their continued service to the community of Alpena.
