Alpena Commissioners Discussed Animal Control at Commissioners Board Meeting

Over the past few weeks, there have been a lot discussions and debates surrounding the Alpena Animal Control Shelter. Today the Counties Commissioners meet at the Alpena Annex building off of West Chisholm street. There were a couple of items on the agenda but only one item captivated the attention of the audience. The topic of animal control was one again brought up by the public during both open comment sessions. However, the Commissioners, apart from a brief statement, remained largely quiet on the subject choosing to revisit the item at a later date.

Present at the meeting were representatives of the group, Friends of the Alpena County Animal Control Shelter. During the public comment segment, one member addressed the Commissioners directly. “As you know recently a survey was created by the County Administrator seeking feedback from constituents regarding management and budget for the shelter. Sadly, we felt like this survey was poorly worded, deceptive and skewed for desired result.” She adds, “In addition, it was left open for fraud or more screwed results because email was not a required field.”

In response to the public comments District 8’s Commissioner, John Kozlowski, said they [Board Members’] spoke with the Alpena Animal Control Officer back in February 10th and got her opinion on how best to move forward with animal control. Commissioner John Kozlowski said, “We’ve had discussions in the Court of Public Safety on how to best move forward and one of the options that were provided to us by the County Administrator was to put out a survey.” John continues, “So, she put out the survey, gave it to us. Some of the questions on there maybe, probably didn’t clarify everything we wanted to but the main thing was to get the publics input on the future of animal control.” He finished his statement by saying, “And when I say future of animal control I want to be clear, because I’ve said this as I did today. We’re looking at options to best facilitate that building and the animal control office.”
