Alpena Celebrates Memorial Day with Parade Through Town

ALPENA, MI. – Alpena honored the national holiday through its Memorial Day Parade this morning

The ceremony opened with a prayer…”We gather here today to commemorate those in our armed forces who made the great sacrifice of life to serve our great country.” With hundreds of American flags waving,  Alpena citizens paid their respects to the fallen military service men and women this Monday morning.

“I celebrate memorial day to honor the veterans who never returned to their home” said George Stevens, U.S veteran.
People gathered for a ceremony outside of the Alpena County Courthouse, laying flowers in memory of fallen soldiers.

Some came to remember a late family member who served the nation, while others recalled on their time fighting for our country.
“I served my country in Vietnam. It was an unpopular war and I am just happy to be back and represent the veterans who have passed away.” said Stevens.

The parade also met to hang wreaths over the graves of service members lost at sea. The national holiday has shown to be prominent for yet another year here in Alpena.
