Alcona Community School art students hand painted and installed a mural by the new gymnasium at their school. Michigan Arts and Culture Council helped fund their project.

“This mural is a collaborative project, with the students of Alcona Community Schools, actually mostly my intro to art and design students” said Erich Carlson, Art instructor at Alcona Community Schools.

The students began working on the concept of the mural back in November and started to bring it to life in February.

“Had a community member, Helen Hierta proposed to me to bring back some of the ceramic programs in the schools and she really helped out with writing some key grants and got some funding to really help us to do that” said Carlson.

Approximately 40 students were involved with this project. The goal of their design was to bring a sense of community and depict living in northeast Michigan with elements such as agriculture and wild life.

“The students created individual tiles as each had a small part which became part of the whole and we put them all together and then we have this finished piece which came out fantastic. So they really worked hard and, I’m really proud of them. And it’s, basically their legacy from, you know being in high school here” said Carlson.
