ACC helps boost workforce

ALPENA, Mich. — Big things are happening for Alpena Community College as Michigan Works Northeast Consortium receives over a million dollars in funding from the state.

Michigan Works asked ACC to partner with them on a grant application to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.  ACC was awarded the grant July 1, and their goal is to enhance programs that will help traditional and non traditional students with a transition from training to the workforce.

ACC partnered with companies Intricate Security and Thunder Bay Tree Service to develop advanced certification programs and training certificate programs.  For Intricate Security’s Owner Eric Vanderveer,  this opportunity has come full circle.

Thunder Bay Tree Service’s Austin Gilmet said, “It’s no secret that there is a labor shortage throughout the entire country and we don’t really have in Michigan a workforce development program for our particular field.  So we were excited when Alpena Community College wanted to partner with us for this.”

Stone said ACC received more than $300,000 to help solve the labor shortage.
