Second Avenue Roadwork in Alpena Well Underway

Second Avenue Roadwork in downtown Alpena is well underway. Motorists in Alpena have been experiencing detours on the city’s north side this spring and summer. A $3.2 million project is underway, overhauling Second Avenue from Fletcher Street to Hubber Street. City Engineer, Stephen Schulz said, “After the last rejection, the Alpena Municipal Council decided to pay for the needed improvement with city money.”

Key components include replacing aging water and sewer lines, reconstructing the street, upgrading curbs and gutters, and installing decorative streetlights and stamped concrete walkways. Despite grant rejections, the Alpena Municipal Council will fund the improvements. Road closure will occur periodically until August, with construction crews working in two block intervals, while Fletcher Street will remain open. Portions of Second Avenue will be closed during construction.
