Work begins on latest mural in Downtown Alpena

ALPENA, Mich. — Britt Flood, a professional artist from Pittsboro, North Carolina has started working on her mural on the Fletcher St. side of the Thunder Bay Theatre warehouse. It’s part of the Alpena Downtown Development Authority’s Fresh Waves Initiative, a program meant to bring vibrant artwork to the area.

Flood has painted murals before but never one quite like this. “I’ve done a two-story mural before but not one just as long as this, so we’ll see how the horizontal composition turns out,” she said.

Flood hopes that the finished product will be something that draws a lot of attention. “For my mural work, i’m hoping for people to stop in their tracks on the sidewalk when they see it,” she said. “I’m hoping to give people moments of surprise and wonder. I do hope there is going to be some hand-holding in the mural so I’d love to see folks posing and mimicking the pose of the mural in front of it and sharing it on social media.”

Flood has a goal in mind concerning her artwork. She says she wants to create a mural in all 50 states. Another goal of her’s is to inspire others. “I hope to inspire other young artists. Murals and painting is super fun, so my biggest goal is to inspire other artists to try to get out there to do it.”

The mural is expected to be completed within four days.
