ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena Wildcat senior Eli Winter announced his commitment to the University of Michigan track and field team after signing his National Letter of Intent last Wednesday.
“Family definitely had an impact on my decision,” Winter said. “My Dad and Grandpa both went there. I wanted to stay in Michigan and it seemed like the best fit for me.”
Last spring, Winter won the Division 1 state title in discus with a throw of over 180 feet, 1 inch. With that throw, he currently has the school record, breaking the previous mark by nearly 20 feet and also captured a Big North Conference title. He gave a lot of credit to his assistant throwing coach Trevor Roznowski for pushing him on a daily basis.
“Whenever I wasn’t feeling it, he pushed me through it so I can get to where I need to be,” Winter said.
Eli plans to study economics with a minor in business.
