Alpena (October 3, 2018) — The Wildcats hosted the Gaylord Blue Devils for their second to last home game of the season. It was an extra special night to honor breast cancer awareness. The girls raised money for Friends Together and honored those who had conquered or were fighting cancer by handing them a pink flower.

“It means everything to me to see her (Allison DeRocher) here and able to play,” said Allison’s grandmother and 15-year cancer survivor Kathleen DeRocher. “She is a special person in my life. This means a lot to me because you can never be too young to be tested.I had several nieces under 40 that had cancer.”

Then it was time to get the game underway. Alpena took the early 16-8 lead in set one, but lost it 25-19. A few missed plays, but the Wildcats cleaned up their defense and took the rest 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18 winning the game 3-2 over the Blue Devils.

“We had to be on our toes. We had to be ready to go dive for those balls because Gaylord was out of system as much as we were,” said Head Coach Kolby Andrews. “When that happens you get tips, you get rolls, you get balls going off of blocks and so we did a great job of just keeping the ball off the floor…it’s just the kids kind of playing their heart out.”

Alpena is now (11-5-4) overall for the season and (2-3-4) in the Big North Conference.
