Wildcats roll past Blue Devils to win regional crown

TAWAS CITY, Mich. — Going into Saturday’s hockey game, the series between the Alpena Wildcats and the Gaylord Blue Devils was all even at one game apiece. Both teams beat each other on their home ice during the regular season.

Not only Saturday’s game was to see who would win the season series but to determine who would take home the Region 18 title. For the second time in three years, the Wildcats brought a regional crown back to Alpena as they roll past the Blue Devils, winning 5-1.

“Winning this game is awesome,” said Blaise Keller. “It was a team effort.”

“It’s an amazing test to our character,” said Wildcats head coach Chris Limback. “I couldn’t be more proud of the kids.”

Keller and Anden Marceau each scored two goals, while Ryan Ritter found the back of the net in the second period to help seal the deal. Up next, the Wildcats (5-11-1) will take on Calumet (16-0-1) in a state quarterfinals match on Wednesday up in Marquette. The puck drop is at 6 p.m.
