ALPENA, MI – Heading into the new year, the wildcats made the “State Champs! Michigan Hockey Yop 25,” clocking in at number 21 in the state. The Wildcats have started to turn people’s heads with their performances as of late, and they look to keep up this strong form with their first game of 2022 against Cheboygan at home.

First period, the puck gets deflected to Jack Lane who takes a shot near the blue line. The goalie in a lapse of judgement, misses the puck and Cheboygan scores the opening goal.

Alpena would shake off that first goal just minutes later. Anden Marceau skating down the right hand side, fires the shot from the side of the net and scores. Alpena’s top scorer ties this one up as if that first goal never happened.

Now Jack Steinke with the puck up the middle, dishes it to Matt Thompson. he takes a shot, loses balance but he still scores. The captain takes the Wildcats into the second period up by one goal.

Second period and Reid Meinhardt breaks free from the defenders, he’s wide open on net and lines up a shot that’s in the back of the net. Alpena pulling away now and they wouldn’t stop just yet.

Wildcats on the power play, Marceau takes a shot that’s saved, but right by the net is cam young who gets the putback goal. It’s 4–1 Alpena heading into the third period.

Now Alpena shorthanded but they’ve got a breakaway with no one around. Elijah White one-on-one with the goalie, gets the goal on Cheboygan’s power play.

The final goal would cement another strong win for Alpena as their leading scorer grabs goal number two on the night. Anden Marceau intercepts the puck and fires it in the bottom left corner of the net and scores.

Alpena continues to show why they’re a team to be feared on the ice as they open 2022 with a big win against Cheboygan 6–1. The Wildcats will be back in action when they hit the road to face Plymouth on Friday.
