Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf comes back to Alpena after nearly 50 years

ALPENA, MICH — Alpena Civic Theater is bringing a classic back to Alpena after a number of difficulties and a time span of nearly 50 years.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf will premier this weekend, after being cancelled during the winter. Bill Powell, who plays George, says bringing the production back to the Civic Theater has been a challenge.

“One of the funny things is that we’ve really gone through a whole lot of folks directing. A lot of folks in town know that we through quite a few illnesses in the winter time when we had originally planned to stage this show. But because of that, we had to cancel but we’re able to do it this weekend coming up. The board has allowed us to do one week and so we’re just excited to bring it back.”

The play tells the story of an older couple whose relationship revolves around verbal abuse toward one another. The pair then involves their colleagues, a younger, unsuspecting couple in their twisted games of hurt and deceit. When asked about the theme of the story, Powell says audience members will leave with one question lingering in their minds.

“Truth and illusion. There are a lot things that are said in this play that in the end when you realize it, you’re not sure if it was true at all or not.”
