ALPENA, Mich.– Easter may have been last Sunday, but we’re not done talking about bunnies.

The eastern cottontail rabbit is the main species in Northeast Michigan, and many like to settle into your lawn when it’s time to nest.

Michelle Sobek, of Nature’s Kingdom Wildlife Rehab, said cottontails leave their young in shallow depressions .

Sobek said you should be on the look out for other animals too.

“It’s baby season for every animal right now. Actually, the birds have started laying eggs, too. So be careful of everything! You can find baby skunks under your shed, you can find baby raccoons running around the yard. Just be really careful about the wildlife.”

Sobek added that a good rule of thumb when mowing is to pay close attention to the ground ahead. Hopefully you can spot a hidden nest and avoid it.

If you do pass over a nest, the babies will be slightly shocked, but no worse for wear if you give them space.

Finally, if you know you have a nest in your yard, walk or play with your dog elsewhere so they don’t hurt the babies
