Very cold air in the Upper Great Lakes region will take a while to retreat

High temperatures today only got to 31 degrees in Alpena. A cold front moved through our area last night. After that, strong northwest winds blew in cold temperatures and generated lake effect snow showers off Lake Michigan.

Scattered snow showers will dissipate this evening. Clearing currently over Wisconsin will settle in tonight and tomorrow morning. A weak disturbance near the Minnesota-Canada border will zip across northern Michigan late-day tomorrow. The greatest chance of showers late Wednesday will be to the west and south of Alpena.

Low temperatures overnight will cool to about 21 degrees. Morning temperatures will be in the upper 20s with some early breaks of sunshine. Clouds will increase in the afternoon with a possibility of showers late, greater chances will be west and south of Alpena. In the late-evening, showers could possibly mix with flurries as temperatures go below freezing.

Wednesday is not looking to be ideal for outdoor activities. Weather conditions will be more cooperative with spending time outdoors Thursday and into the weekend. Thursday will be dry, and Friday will have less cloud cover. For now, the forecast for Saturday is looking dry in our area (although a chance of showers coming from the south will get up to Saginaw Bay).

Wednesday afternoon, high temperatures will reach about 42 degrees and a few showers are possible late-day. Thursday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the lower 40s. Temperatures will get a little warmer Friday, getting to the upper 40s with partly cloudy skies.
